New research suggests that face masks may offer more protection against coronavirus infection than previously thought. It suggests that coughs and sneezes may be projected much further than scientists had thought possible. The World Health Organisation is considering whether to update its guidance on face masks and the White House may recommend that Americans wear them. Meanwhile in the UK hospitality companies are turning their skills to help those in need. And for the second week in a row, applause has rung out from members of the public showing gratitude to NHS staff and other workers helping to keep the country going. This was always the case. They totally messed up the messaging: in their attempts to keep masks for the healthcare workers and away from the general public’s hands, they lied their way through this situation and only made it worse: “masks will only help sick people, not healthy people” (but you can be infectious without being symptomatic); “it will only help healthcare workers, not normal people” (how on earth is that logical?!). They should’ve been honest and advised people on how to use masks properly, education is key. But also, if there were concerns about stockpiling and not enough resources, they should’ve been straightforward about it, but it’s their failure for not preparing in advance. We are all going to be needing masks for months and months.
