The 47 Ronin (1941) Retro Review

My samurai kick continues as today I review parts 1 and 2 of the 1941 film The 47 Ronin. Though the movie is absolutely fantastic it suffers from not having any clear stand out characters...what is worse though is how poorly preserved the film is #47ronin #japan #WWII #moviereview #samurai

Though Japanese history pre and post World War II is definitely complicated, it is sad that many of the films made before the end of the war likely were destroyed.

I visited the gravesite where the loyal 47 are buried. A highlight of my trip to Japan. It was nice to pay tribute to the old ways in the hurlyburly of modern Japan.

The Criterion Channel is well worth your money. I buy it for a whole year. I think I pay $100 for a year. There is so much content I don’t believe I will ever get through it all. There is a must see called Come and See by filmmaker Elem Klimov. I know this Russian filmmaker is off topic but it is one of the most amazing films I have ever seen. Without Criterion I would never have had the chance to see it.

I've seen this one and I can honestly say I can't remember a thing about it. Odin, when you it 40, your Check Engine Light comes on.

I know it's far from perfect, I enjoyed the remake anyway.
But the original is clearly the masterpiece. No school like old school.

But bad jokes aside, now I have to see if I can find a version to watch. Here's a comment to help with the algorithm :)
(I'd still recommend the Rurouni Kenshin movies, if you have the time. They might not be on the same level as this, but there is a lot of great stuff. Even if you appreciate them just for the symbolism of a 'reverse bladed katana'.
