I have been a teacher for 50 years, the last 30 as an educational therapist in private practice working with students with learning disabilities. My California teacher training course work was totally worthless, nothing but "politically correct" junk; nothing on HOW to teach; no child development or educational psych. I went back to school and got another degree in Psychology, emphasizing Cognitive Psych (3 courses, plus physiological psych and 3 courses in psycho-ed testing). The cognitive psych has been the most important tool that I use to evaluate the needs of my students and to create instruction that meets each of their unique needs. I believe EVERY teacher should be required to complete at least Cognitive Psych 101, a Research Methods class (so they will know how to read research journals for the rest of their careers!), a Child Development class, a Human Language Development class and a class on Psychoeducational Testing (so teachers can read the reports and understand what the scores mean.)

As a mathematics teacher I'm starting to see how NCTM has been more focused on ideology than objectivity.
