A leap second was added to the last UTC minute of 2016, so at 2359 UTC (5:59 pm CST) on December 31, 2016 the minute had 61 seconds.

The leap second was added to keep atomic clock time in sync with the Earth's rotation, which varies. When Earth time and the time on atomic clocks get out of sync a one second adjustment is made. The adjustments are made, when needed, at either the end of June or the end of December.

This time signal was from WWV on 10 MHz. WWV is the time and frequency standard station operated by NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology). WWV is located near Fort Collins, Colorado.

The radio is a Yaesu FT-840 amateur radio transceiver.
