We went to see some brand new Modern Houses here in Tokyo.

The Genkan (玄関) is the welcome pit just inside the front door that serves as a gathering place for shoes and guests. 
When you enter a Japanese house, you leave your shoes in the genkan and proceed into the rest of the house in slippers.

All 3 houses were very nice contemporary designs. The living spaces are a little small though. But, if you don't have children it would be perfect. Thanks for sharing.
