If you have the European version of Rocksmith that came out in September 2012 then bass guitar compatibility is included as standard (as indicated on the front cover of the packaging). The US version that came out a year earlier required a downloadable update from your console's relevant online service.

You couldn't initially, but a downloadable update for the game that came out in August 2012 added bass guitar compatibility for the first time. The European version of Rocksmith that came out in September 2012 included bass guitar compatibility as standard.

I love how this game NEVER had to dump on Guitar Hero to succeed (unlike Power Gig).
The only reason I'm not playing this game is because I'm a drummer, so I'm playing RB4. But I strongly recommend this for guitarists (and now bassists)
