I like to have a flat reference face or character design as like a base to work and reference with, and adjust it with facial expressions.

It helps to keep the character consistent with proportions and what not. Awesome tip regardless though.

This is why thumbnailing your drawing multiple times and exaggerating the expressions and features everytime is good, because you'll be able to make more expressive faces easier with practice.

The secret is EYEBROWS. Yes warping method works but the position of the eyebrows influence EVERYTHING about your work. From the mood, to the tone, to the emotion, etc. It can be done without them of course but eyebrows are just so important that even if you erase them after the fact the placement and use of them is key.
