Autonomic dysreflexia (AD)
- Is a sudden increase in blood pressure, 20-40 mm Hg systolic higher than usual, caused by an injury, pain or anything harmful below the neurologic levels in a person with a SCI (spinal cord injury)
This is a condition that happens with people that have an injury level T6 and above. If untreated it can lead to a stroke, seizures and even death.
- Common causes (pressure ulcers, distended bladder, etc...)
- Signs and Symptoms
- Above the injury level (sweating, goosebumps, ect..)
- Below injury level (chills w/out fever, pale, ect...)
- What to do? (monitor BP, check skin, bowel/bladder, ect..)
- When to seek Emergency care..
Dealing with low blood pressure
- things that make your blood pressure drop
- being hungry/weak (blood sugar)
- eating/digestion
- body temperature raising
- after bowel program
- medications (cannabis)
- what's helps bring up blood pressure
- compression socks
- abdomen binder
- salty foods or drink can help (chips, pedialyte, ect..)
- seating position
- increasing circulation/blood flow
