I always had an idea for Grimlock to balance the two depictions (rage-filled intelligent tactician vs loveable goofball himbo sidekick) of him.

Most of the time he would be the later and be an all-around great guy, but god help you if you’re an enemy and give him a reason to become the former. Essentially, he'd be like Spider-Man or Superman in the sense of "don’t give him a reason to stop smiling". It’d be at the point where new Autobot recruits might find it hard to believe that Grimlock is this master general/tactician/warrior until they see him go berserk in combat with this manic glee in his eye and loving every minute of it, in which case they’d learn very quickly.
