Yet Another Localization Controversy...

The Persona franchise appointed a "localization director" for its Xbox / PC releases. However, it seems like every time a localization controversy pops up, this "localization director" is the common denominator. But is there anything to worry about?

She's not working for the fans. She's working for herself, and her own ego. Despite literally admitting that her "localizations" are "controversial" or would "make a lot of people upset, " she does it anyways! This is the equivalent of a food worker utterly refusing to cater something that you do not find palatable, and will say "No, you are wrong, you must have this on it - it is BETTER." She should be fired for failing to do her job right, which is to make the consumers happy.

Man I've done localization work to help out a friend with his webcomic. The way to do localization properly is simple. Stick to the original script, just make it sound natural. That's all ya gotta do. If the line translates to "A sword a dragon kills I did" you just fix it up to "I used a sword to kill a dragon". Nothing changed. Just making it natural English. Never change the point of the original script.

People like her already HEAVILY misinterpret the themes and characters of Persona 4 as it is; they're the sort who claim Naoto is trans (rather than simply wishing to be respected in her work, like men are by default) or that Kanji is gay (rather than worrying his interests MAKE him gay) so this is alarming. The shadows are exaggerated portrayals of their worries and fears; not true aspects of themselves. Thats why when they 'accept' that fear that the shadows represent, the shadow calms down massively and becomes less overt and exaggerated.

As a localiser I can say that the post at 1:15 is accurate, with ports/remasters of games that have been around a while localisers aren't even ALLOWED to make changes to pre-existing content. Any changes to legacy strings will be waived by the developer. Making changes to a game is way more involved than it seems to be for a light novel/manga/anime, Everything we do goes through the developer for approval. If they say no to the change, the change doesn't happen. I've literally tried to fix 15 year old spelling mistakes in a remaster before and the request was denied due to it being marked as a legacy string. The localisation process for these game will be just as they are in the twitter post, New system terminology, new button prompts, probably the settings menu for PC, and then running though the game over and over again for sanity checks.

I'm more surprised that she hasn't been punished for announcing so openly that she's working on the games. The NDAs I have to sign mean I'm not allowed to talk about projects I'm assigned to until release, And Sega's NDAs for localisation aren't that different. If I'd made an announcement like that online I'd probably be fired, regardless of what the project is.

The games have already been in English for years now. What Localizers(slur) are going to do is "Fix any problematic" scenes, change VAs they see as "problematic" and anything that their political bias find inappropriate for Western audiences believing them nothing more then children. Now we know This was the person in charge that altered Persona 5.
Any company caught doing this should have their licenses revoked and have to pay a large fee in damages, since as we saw such like FE: Fates, The World Ends With you and others, they impact western sales. Localizers are a blight on anime, manga and gaming.

What localization means: faithfully translating something to a different language without changes, unless a joke doesn’t work

What localizers do: change the parts you personally as a single person in a group of thousands don’t like, and fit it to your liking, disgracing the honor of the original.

I’m seeing a growing backlash that includes groups of fans going fuck it and learning Japanese to both enjoy the material in Japanese and to become translators themselves.

The irony is that if the localisers try and make Naoto trans or Kanji gay then both of them would essentially be running away from the truth, since they’d fall into their shadows delusions (That Kanji is gay for liking girly things/being attracted to a “guy” and that Naoto has to be male to succeed and earn respect as a detective) which in turn would kill them both via their shadows running amok.

Edit: I reconsidered my opinion and came to the conclusion that she should get fired and never work in the any similar industry ever again.
