Thanks for this, and your earlier video on setting up omv on a RPi 5 with a Raspberry M.2 hat and M.2 2 Port SATA adapter. On the strength of that earlier video I setup a system based on it + also a 2.5 GB USB Ethernet adapter, and it (and OMV) have been working great for me! You're a star!

I just switched from XigmaNAS to OMV because I wanted Docker Compose and heard OMV would work well on lower-spec systems (mine are similar to the one you used for testing in this video). It works like a charm! Once I understood the plugin stuff, I was able to install some extras like Plex, DLNA, and Wyze Bridge for our smart cameras. Very nice. I was even able to import an existing ZFS pool with all of our media we stream to local clients. Understand the frustration about save + apply changes (feels similar to a Linksys router I used to have back in the day). Seems like a solid OS so far, and thanks for the helpful walkthrough!

OMV is incredibly stable! It just has a setup/learning curve that kinda is a pain, it's incredibly simple and lightweight and very resilient...it's just has a MUCH less refined "GUI" functionality, than TrueNAS or UnRAID.
The biggest thing the developers could do...get rid of that nag check mark and just have it automatically roll into the salt config, that is annoying!
It would also be nice if they had a small "info" box with the default folder location on the compose screen so you could copy/paste right from there w/o needing to go back and forth.

I installed OMV7 on both pi4 and pi5 and both works well as a NAS very well and stable. Thanks for the video, well made, and truly can help all those in need :)

I tried setting up my own NAS using open media vault on a Raspberry Pi for some reason, I was able to put files on it, but when I tried to retrieve them, it said cannot read file trying to use it to store my finished video projects. I don’t know what I was doing wrong I’ve asked for help and never got a response on Twitter or Instagram.

Thanks for this awesome video! Do OMV and TrueNAS serve the same purpose? Which one is easier for a newbie to start with? If I understood it correctly, you mentioned a smoother experience with TrueNAS at the end of this video.

Thanks for the review. Having TrueNAS on all my NASes at home, cannot fully understand use cases for other more simple "NAS shells" like OMV, CasaOS and other... Portable NASes maybe?

Don, I’m still devastated about your diagnosis. Please keep me/us updated on your health state. I wouldn't have your mental strength, if I were in your place. It's simply admirable! I'm wondering how it's possible for you to keep your head up in a situation like this.
And even though you’re not asking for any money and I’m not a wealthy man by any means, I at least want to compensate you for me watching your videos with adblockers enabled. This would be the very least I can do. Since "thoughts and prayers" don't pay any bills, please give me the chance to do so.
