I've been wanting to do this video for 6 months now. Finally, the other day I was able to pull it together and compare the 981 Cayman GT4 versus the 718 GT4.

Within a couple minutes of driving its clear that the new GT4 is more capable, faster, and much more comfortable. The thing is that that the old GT4 is just more raw and special...

What were the 718 owner's thoughts and comparisons? Would love to hear his choice also. Love the 981 but I am curious to see how he viewed the experience.

Old Gt4 looks more like the GT car in all honesty. A proper baby GT3

Lively and interesting as usual. I have had my 981 GT4 for 7 years and it gets better each year as it loosens up. Brilliant to drive. Particulate filter used in some countries with the new one negates some of the raw sound. I didn't upgrade because the performance figures, despite the increased horsepower, are exactly the same. Waiting for the GT4RS which is PDK only, but hey, it has the brilliant PDK from the current GT3RS.

3:47 looks like you need some 3M! 😆 nice comparison. I too had to choose between the 981 and 718 and ended up with the 981. Better bang for the buck, sound, I actually prefer the looks, and to me the 718 felt almost too refined if that’s a thing. I’m sure it’s more capable but man that 981 makes me smile every single time. Enjoy!

Great job Miles. You have so much enthusiasm and passion in your videos and you really know your stuff. I have had my 981 GT4 for about 5 years now. I absolutely love it. Last year I sent it up to sharwerks and had them do their full tune package on it.. They called it their GT$ RS which included re-gearing ( shorter gears and the stock gears are a bit long), light flywheel, performance chip, new exhaust, LSD, and all performance bolt ons, BMC air filter, etc, etc . Added about 50 HP .. and cost me about $25K but boy what a huge difference in rawness, edginess and power . It just feels perfect now. The stock version was a 9 and now its a 10. If any of you are considering upgrading yours ..I am telling you its worth the money. Sharwerks is has a great rep as porsche tuner. My next car I am saving up for is a 992 GT3 manual but I am keeping my GT4.. anyways great video keep them coming

The fact that the PDK equipped GT4 can do 3.4s 0-60 is crazy for the amount of power they make. I'll take my slower 981 GT4 since its just so much fun to row gears and speed isn't everything.

I went for the 981 with DeMan 4.5 conversion. Completely different experience. More power than a GT3.

I love my 981 GT4 and would not trade for the 718. For me has more raw sound, on the track cars are pretty close and driving a stick IMO takes much more skill than the PDK. Also stick offers the fun factor. Send a 981 to Deman Motorsports and change gears in the transmission. Will change things dramatically. Nice video! Both are awesome cars

I think this is the first video that you have done that I felt you were not sure which way to go . A car being more raw has pros and cons . Like for me your 765 Lt and the Lamborghini STO are my two favorite cars right now, and I would probably take yours simply based on speed and ease of driving when I am tired . Sometimes going for a drive should be relaxing like therapy, not exhausting.

Fully agree. I have had my 981 GT4 for 6 months now, and with Fabspeed headers this has the fizz (!!). Have driven the 781 GT4 on a few occasion- more intake noise, sure, but overall felt like it lacked the extra excitement the 981 offers.

718 4.0 PDK on a track circuit wins every time. No comparison. 981 sounds better in stock form. The 718 aero creates less lift and more downforce. Both have strong aftermarket support. I say whatever one people can get their hands on, go for it. You should find a local track and run the vids there. Street driving comparisons aren’t safe the way you’re driving them. A track circuit would allow you to properly evaluate suspension changes, the aero benefits, and overall lap times in a much more controlled environment. Overall love the energy you show throughout the video.

Interesting, Mick--maybe a bit surprising. I hate the exterior on the 718--but it is the better car overall. Guards Red or black--WITH the PDK, tan interior--I'll take it. Not that the Raspberry Sherbet is bad, but it is hard to beat generational advances. And while stick is fun of course, no way it compares to PDK for pure performance. Great Vid, as always!
