U-Boat diesel engine sound. Cruising at standard ahead speed for 10 hours...with water swoosh and foam. Sampled from Silent Hunter III... Enjoy.

I wish there was a way of listening to this while napping and sleeping, and being able to set the wake-up time to the "Alllarrm!" ::grins::

There's nothing better than to fall asleep with sound of those old diesels.

Theresa's nothing more beautiful than a submarine. And sailing ships. Nothing like the lines of a sailing ship. I had sailed with a three-mast schooner. Wonderful ship! With holds that are as big as churches!

Thanks for posting this. I now use it for White Noise when I sleep.
Diesel-Electric propulsion was made to soothe crewmen to sleep. I wouldn't want to be in the engine room while those big diesels were running, but, anywhere else on the boat (or ship) the noise and vibration would dim to a comfortable burr.

As mysterious as the ocean is, there's a lot less of it to hide in than we usually think.
The Typ VIIC/40 had a safe operating depth of around 660' / 200m (theoretical maximum is 825' / 250m) and a crush depth of 920-1010'' / 280-375m. Since the average depth of the ocean is 3300' / 1000m there was usually a lot of water under the keel. Today's nuclear subs can go deeper with relative safety, but it still does it in the upper layer of the water column; nothing capable of reaching the real depths of the abyss (8000m and below) has anything like a WW2 submarine's speed or endurance above, or below, the waves. Deep Diving ROVs creep along at a naut or two. Submarines cruise the top 300m / 1000' of their medium, unlike aircraft, which can easily top 3000m without special equipment and as much as 20, 000m with high altitude engines (supercharged piston or turbojets/turbofans).
A plane is much faster and has a LOT more room to move around in its designed medium than a submarine does. The sub, on the other hand, is much slower, but a LOT harder to see with the naked eye. Strange to me that Airplane Listening Devices are too uncertain and imprecise to make them worthwhile for either locating or illuminating planes, while submarine listening devices (i.e.: SoNAR and Hydrophones) use sound as the main way to detect and illuminate submarines*.

such a beautiful sound the perfect sound for an engine in my opinion if i had an electric car id still play this just to let people appreciate the noise of a diesel engin

best wakeup ever: the sound of a goddamn TORPEDO hits your crew cabin below the waterline at 3am and youll be late to get to the other side of the quickly closing reinforced hull section door to cut out that -2 celsius freezing seawater that bursts in and youre already knee deep in. Makes you really think about bad mornings and hell might just go back to bed instead of waking up

That sound is from Silent Hunter 3 - a game which I used to play but I need to get another copy.
