The Bored Ape Festival Disaster

A couple weeks ago I went to HongKong for the Bored Ape Yacht Club event titled ApeFest.
During ApeFest there were some very unexpected issues in regards to the UV lighting.

Dang, with approximately 1000 people possibly going blind, Ape fest almost undid all of MrBeast’s charity work

It’s UV-C lighting that’s causing this, UV-A is the typical recreational lighting called black light, UV-C is primarily used in medical fields as a disinfectant and surface sterilising tool. A few minutes of exposure to UVC is equivalent to couple hours in the mid day sun, looking directly at UVC light within 8ft for more than 20-30seconds can cause damage to the retina and prolonged exposure can literally make you go blind. Although it does not penetrate deep into the skin it can cause skin burns similar to sunburn but within minutes. Be aware!

Getting NFT Bros to go from one line to another while pilfering them of their money is the most NFT thing ever.

It was actually quite a blessing in disguise that Atozy lost his way to the Event so the amount of time he would get exposed to the harmful UV lights was cut shorter.

Hopefully, once everyone gets home and gets their medical bills, the lawsuits will start flying into the NFT scammers' mailboxes.

As a welder I know this feeling well. It’s typically called welders burn. Definitely keep eye lubricants around, helps so much and limit screen time. Cool compresses over your eyes helps also.

Can't wait for this to be an Internet Historian video in about 50 years

They literally got a bunch of UV bulbs that they sell for tanning beds basically and used those. that's why they give you those black out goggles when you go tanning.

What I'm concerned about is the workers who were put in place to work that room at what I'm sure was minimum wage. Those guys got hours of exposure. Let's make sure those people get all of the love, and support needed.

"Great event guys, met amazing people, almost went blind."

They where definitely trying to down play it. There was no reason for them to add "Much Less than 1% of attendees and workers had symptoms"

The dangerous part of UV, just like infrared, your eyes can't see it so you don't have a blink reflex to shield your eyes.
The damage done is only beginning to surface, as this causes long-term injury.

The good thing about all of this, is that they made so much money from scamming people, that they have more than enough to pay for the lawsuits.

Dude, I work with UVC-A quite a bit for disinfection. The sad thing is, everyone who was exposed has a higher chance now of skin/eye cancer. The UV lights literally break down material on a cellular level. It's one of the only pieces of disinfection that has 100% disinfecting rate depending on time of exposure, distance from exposure, and frequency of the UVC-A. I wish everyone the best, but keep this in mind as time goes on, if you happened to get some type of skin cancer/eye cancer(Sorry don't know all the medical terms for such) then you may have to sue for damages. UVC-A is not something to fuck with or take lightly.

NFT is essentially “hey I’m rich and famous and I say this worthless thing has value” and people flock to it

I mean, hearing about a bunch of suckers getting fleeced and blinded by scammers? Pure gold.

Theres something Shakespeareanly Ironic when a bunch of people who willingly paid for Bored Ape NFTs got their eyes disinfected

They're lucky it was in HK where the medical facilities are really advanced. Hundreds of festivals happen in HK and I've never heard of burning eyeballs being a common experience. Clearly BAYC chose the cheapest contractors, didn't do due diligence and hopefully they will pay in lawsuits.

Never expect anything good from people who are trying to profit from idiots.

Despite my feelings about NFTs it’s so aggravating that people have to deal with this. Clearly an oversight from someone who doesn’t care enough. Hopefully everyone is able to keep safe and healthy.
