Deere 1025R Compact Tractor Air Cleaner bracket broke! (and welded fix!)

UPDATE!!! Oct 2018 - John Deere has released an updated bracket for the 1025 that fixes this defect. Ask your dealer about JD Solution Number: 113718. This should be a recall, but it's good to know that they have addressed the design flaw.

The metal bracket holding my air cleaner on my John Deere 1025r fell apart! I think it must have vibrated itself to death and/or been some defective steel. I welded it back together while I was waiting on the dealer to order the new part under warranty so I could keep using my tractor.

Bracket Part #: LVU29618 - around $60 retail
Strap Part #: LVA16535 - around $25 retail

You'll also get a sneak preview of some work I've been doing on outdoor kitchen / patio at the end.

Thanks for watching!!!

Behind the scenes:
Filmed with GoPro Hero 5 Black in 1080p and 2.7k resolution at 30fps. Linear lens mode in Protune mode (45Mb/s).
Audio recorded with Rode Wireless lavalier mic system.

Edited with Adobe Premier CC 2018 - my first video with this version. They have made numerous improvements to the graphics layers and they seem to work well so far.

I usually avoid the camera myself, but decided to make a few cameo's on this vid!

18GB of raw video into 2.2 GB edited video at 16 Mb/s bit rate for upload.

That bracket and the air filter location in general turned out to be a major design flaw. Be glad the studs in the valve cover didn’t break.

Found the broken part lying on the driveway just behind the tractor. Initial reaction was that such a chunky part could not have come from the tractor but after rejecting the idea that it fell from a aeroplane I recalled, when replacing the air filter element, wondering why such a heavy bracket was required to support the air filter! As you say, in the very nice video, only weighs a couple of pounds. Sure enough, after checking under the hood, the bracket is broken just as yours did. The tractor is 4 years old so predates the JD fix. Why did it fail now? Well I managed to run out of diesel, my bad. When restarting after run out the engine seems to fire on one cylinder for twenty or thirty seconds and during that period the engine vibrates violently, I suspect that caused the fracture. I used the tractor for three hours before making the discovery and as far as I can tell no damage done other than the bracket. Obviously the filter should be supported but something more compliant along the lines of your bungee would seem sufficient. Good news on the update.

Great video, thanks for the heads up on that part. I've got 42hrs on mine right now, hopefully it doesn't break. Also hope buying JD wasn't a big mistake, they sure do have plenty of issues with their products lately. Thanks again for sharing!

I have a 2016 1025r and just had my 200 hr service. was told there is a bulletin out on the air cleaner problem. the dealer said they are suppose to change them over to the new air cleaner at no cost, which they did. Talk to your dealer, like I said they are suppose to change them over at no cost to you

I just replaced my strap on my 1025R (has only 60 hours on it now)! Not sure when it broke but I also had that knocking noise and finally figured out that the strap was missing. Must have broke at some point. Dealer still took care of me

This bracket also broke on my 1025R. The strap has now broken for the second time. The service manager at John Deere Quality Equipment in Henderson, NC said he had never seen this failure before.

I found out mine had also broken. I notice something sounded different but didn't find the problem until filling my 55 gal sprayer with water. I have no idea where the strap is and I also have no idea how long the strap has been missing but I found the part today as I almost drove over it. I already have 165 hours on mine and haven't had it a year yet I don't think so hoping warranty with cover both. thanks for the info and video.

Of all the components to break on my tractor, it was a simple steel bracket holding on the air cleaner! Hope yours fares better. Fortunately, it was covered by warranty and will be replaced soon.

I have to check mine once the rain stops. So much to do around here. It looks like a vibration fracture. Might need to put a pillow of sorts that the cleaner modifies the movement.

Mine broke too. I haven't fixed it yet. The new one I got is thicker than the old one which broke. Apparently Deere figured out that it is a problem. I can't tell if yours is the thicker one or not from the video.

I can see why it broke. Bending aluminum weakens the material in the bend area and those cuts made it worse.

Exactly the same thing just happened to my 1025R after 194 hours total time. It's obviously a design/metallurgical fault, probably caused by intergranular corrosion. Add that to vibration, and that's how metal falls apart.

It was quite a shock when this thing simply fell off

The interesting part is that I never saw that strap, at all, before, and it's not down in the engine compartment loose somewhere.

Do you have the part number for the "new" part? The old one cannot be found in the John Deere online parts catalog, indicating that they have removed the old part and replaced it with the new one mentioned in the video.

I bought a 1023 from mead tractor 2 years ago and I have had it in tghe shop 6 times. 3 times to have the tractor adjusted because my deck never connected without alot of effort. Its supposed to be auto connect deck, its very hard to get it in. Then one time for broken shaft from deck to tractor, the yolk snapped. Then my 54 inch deck cracked and they gave me a new one. Now it is currently in the shop because the transmission seal is leaking good, and my connections on my tractor that my bucket hook to blew this weekend. I am thinking I got a lemon!!

I could never understand why they made it all different for the air cleaner on the 1025. My 1026 is setup different and much better. It's held in place with a metal strap. Never had any trouble with it and now have over 900 hours on it. I even have a gauge on mine telling me when the air cleaner needs changing. I don't rely on it but it's good for a quick under the hood check. My air cleaner goes side to side instead of front to back. The metal strap screws to the radiator housing. I just take the side panel off when I want to replace the air filters. Don't have to undo any straps.
