Why I Use IntelliJ IDEA

IntelliJ IDEA has been my IDE of choice for over 10 years. This is why.

Been doing Java development for some 20 years, almost all on Eclipse. I have tried IntelliJ a few times and even got license (one of my former Employers had team license) and I used it on and off. As much as the UI looks refined and more "polished", for the day to day work, I didn't really find anything that the good old Eclipse does not do just fine. Yes, you sometimes have to close projects you are not working on and may be delete that darn mvn index folder that is 2GB; the rest of it is really comes down to habit/familiarity.

For the same reasons I have tried other IDEs and gotten the same mixed feelings. Like buying a car or a house, it comes down to "yes, I like this" moment. Otherwise, I have not seen anyone convince me to use any IDE for X, Y or Z. They say it is great, they say they had an awful experience with Eclipse. I still am looking for some concrete things you can do in IntelliJ but are not doable or difficult in STS(or Eclipse). By the way, have not used Spring/STS; but I have tried them on toy projects.

At the end, if you know enough shortcuts in your IDE to make your day to day job joy(or livable at least), you are where you need to be. Switch when you can't use that IDE for some real reason. This other shiny thing is cool does not convince me.

It is so expensive, after trying it, I spent so much time configuring run, compile, etc. Netbeans has a run button and BOOM!!!, and super integrated support for MAVEN which I use a lot. If IntelliJ integrates MAVEN as seamless as netbeans, I may give it another try. Does anyone have a good comparison of InteliJ and Netbeans?

I have been using Eclipse since early 2000s and I really love it though sometimes it gets slowly and crash for no reason. I am trying IntelliJ now because I am taking John's spring course. I am still not being convinced that Intelij is a much better IDE than Eclipse. STS 4 is a fantastic tool for spring boot development
