I have been playing bass since I was 15 years old, I'm now fifty three, and I've always played by ear.I can't read sheets at all even though I did take lessons in the beginning with sheets but didn't continue long because it was so boring to me lol. I just loved playing, and even was able to learn some crazy classical runs after a few years of ear-training, and jamming with a guitarist friend who was 10 times better than me. I'm not saying it's the best way to learn, but it did work for me and I am sure lots of others as well..But having said that, If you were my teacher back then, I would most definitely have had a blast. On a different "note" (sorry for the pun) I need to state here that after nearly a year of doing things your way, namely working really hard at working out pieces by ear, it has proven for me the best way for ongoing success. I don't stop to look for the sheet music etc. I just sit down and listen listen listen with bass in hands. This way has been great for my ear as well as my inner patience. You've also made me a big believer in too much spoon feeding being a detriment.

There is no substitute for hours and hours of working things out by ear. And no excuses...since it is much much easier to rewind digital media than it was in our day rewinding and wearing out cassette tapes and players.

So in summary, these videos out yours are highly effective and much appreciated. And I hope they don't stop! ☺
