Hypermiler Wayne Gerdes recently secured a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title for achieving the lowest fuel consumption while driving across the United States, from Los Angeles City Hall to New York City Hall. Gerdes completed the 3,211.7-mile journey in a Toyota Prius LE with an impressive fuel economy of 93.158 miles per gallon, smashing the previous record, which was in the mid-70s.

Since its introduction in 2000, the Prius has become a symbol of hybrid technology, combining an electric motor with a highly efficient engine. Toyota has expanded this innovation into nearly every segment of their lineup, showcasing their commitment to reducing carbon emissions while offering diverse powertrain options to meet different needs.

Gerdes navigated through diverse terrains and weather conditions, from the scorching Mojave Desert to mountain passes at 7,000 feet, proving the Prius can maintain efficiency in even the toughest environments.

The average person cant drive like this. He dosent use the AC cooling in hot weather, and keeps the windows up for aero efficiency. You would get sick if you try that driving through Arizona. This is a sportsmanlike feat.

Pump the tires, no ac even in hot weather, drive below the speed limit and seldom use the brakes- not sure if regen is turned off. It’s hard to pull off and congratulations on you doing it.

That's very impressive. A friend of mine, just averaged 181 MPGe in his Chevy Bolt for the last 3000 miles.

I wish I could get more details about this trip because I also like to hypermile. What was the psi in the tores? What was the highest speed he drove throughout the trip? How many hours did he drive a day and how many days to complete the trup? Was that mpg hand calculated or what the car displayed? Did he use the major freeways or intentionally use some back roads in some sections to gain mpg numbers? I really wiah to know if he used some of those freeways with a speed limit of 75 mph and if he drove at 75 mph or drove on that freeway at only 60 mph.

I hate people who drives like this just to prove something at the cost of other driver's patience on the road. He wants to set a world record, do it somewhere off the public streets.

Prius driver saved 40+ mpg and tons of dollars while driving slowly and limiting his braking. Meanwhile, the accidents and trouble caused during the 3k mile journey was.... eff it... GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS baby!!!!

The engineering is such that fuel efficiency is deplorable until the car figures out how to warm up and it is too stupid to do that parked and the EV function is said to be severely limited by a small battery. I'm now investigating Toyota's representations of efficiency and wondering how a conventional ICE fares under these circumstances.
