James started the song a little faster than the record, then a cocained Lars suddenly raised 30 bpms to the song. Priceless savagery!

I think this video proves that Canada may have had some great cocaine in the 80's.

This is proof that James Hetfield's right arm is robotic.

That awkward moment when Metallica were faster than Slayer.

This was in 1986 and Jason was on bass, so this can't have been long after Cliff's death (RIP). No wonder they sound particularly angry here, even by the standard set by their early shows!

The duo guitar solo is unmatched. Every chord was seamless.

Watching Metallica in '86 is like watching Mike Tyson in his prime going 19-0

You’ve got to be a bad ass to just step in and play this tour less than a month after joining the group. Newsted was a boss live particularly on the Justice tour

I saw them live at the Max Bell Arena in Calgary, Alberta, Canada on December 17th, 1986. I can attest to the fact that they played with the same hellacious, white-hot, angry fury as this video shows, most likely being partially out of their minds with grief over Cliff's death (and, in Jason's case, sheer joy for being picked as Metallica's new bassist). Of course, at age 18, those factors didn't come to mind - I was simply blown halfway around the world by their triple-speed playing. I loved Cliff, but I accepted the inclusion of Jason easily, since it kept my favorite band (at the time) motoring on. It's a shame that Lars and James couldn't, and tortured and tuned him him out of the band in ten years...their loss. But, oh, well...who among us hasn't fucked up hugely in life? Vive le Metallica.

F*ck me, James & Lars were truly insane at that time. I'd like to travel in a time machine and being at that show. Too brutal!!!
