That altered D7 after the D13sus is unreal, as is the walkup to the Em11. So creative and warmly voiced!

Incredible sequence, I listened 8 times in a row.

I'm a PhD with three academic majors - but I wish nothing more in life than to understand this level of music theory

7/4 (as 4/4 then 3/4), really beautiful playing, although I'm not a pianist I'm definitely going to think about using some of these voicings/movements when writing - I love this channel so much for that, thank you guys so much :)

Very nice, Peter. Each iteration was more interesting than the one before it, and the last one was Wow! so artful, so cool.

Thank you for providing the chords on the screen. I’m gonna try to play this by ear and see how I do!

to me it sounds like 4/4 + 3/4 that's where the chords change. on the 3/4 part he plays 2/3 and 4/3 polyrhythms. Also with a very nice swing feel.

Another clear marker of this being 7 is that the big fill on Em11 (last repeat) is clearly phrased in triplets even to people with terrible ears (🫵😀looking at this comment section). And those triplets only register as triplets when counted in a tempo that gives 7. In order to force a 5 count over this, you’d need to slow the tempo and ruin the poetry of these beautiful phrases. In 7, it’s all symmetry and no rubato with a strong undercurrent of triplets throughout including the syncopations.

I dream of a world where I turn on my radio and it's music like this. I don't know why we don't celebrate the people who push music theory in beautiful and sometimes more complex ways.

@hbd1257 makes a good point, but for me it's easier to feel 5/4 with some 4 against 3 eighth notes than a swung 7/4. Because in this context, at least for me, 5/4 feels smooth, and 7/4 feels rushed and anxious 🙃
