I've covered Mac OS Tips and Tricks across a range of videos on this channel, but one thing I've not really covered are the core fundamentals that I think every Mac owner needs to know about. The things that you're going to have to do with your Mac from time to time, that you won't know about unless someone shows you. So that's what I've done in this video! 20 things that I think every Mac owner should know about.

You should always eject drives on a PC as well. This ensures you are not removing a drive during a write process which could case corrupted data. Depending on what programs are accessing your drive you might not even be aware you're drive is being written to.

0:40 - Spotlight Search - Used to frustrate me as it wouldn't find files, which is what I usually want. Tip: Add the Option key and you get a Finder search - Cmd+Option+Space

8:30 - another favorite tip for quitting apps is to use the "command" + "tab" interface. Hold "command", don't let go. Tap "tab" one or more times to cycle through your open apps (you can also just use the left/right arrow keys or even your mouse to pick the app you want). Then press "Q" to quit that app (works on iPad as well).

You can also get the force quit menu by pressing command option escape

Another great video, mate. I really appreciate your efficient presentation style, which doesn't rely on a lot of click-baity titles, jargon, filler, graphics, or unnecessary transitions. I look forward to more of your content.

If you want to use the external drive on another non mac device, you should think about formatting as ExFAT. ExFAT drives can be both written and read in MacOS or Windows.

I used to hate having to eject thumb drives, but now I have a 2TB iCloud plan…and I haven’t used a thumb drive in years now.

Should also mention that Macs don’t actually need to be “shut down” every time you stop using them. Instead people should get used to putting their Mac to sleep and shutting down occasionally (every few weeks or when travelling). This was an eye opener for me when coming from Windows.

I’m really enjoying your videos. Even though I haven’t bit the bullet & laid out the cash for a Mac computer, I’m using 2 ipads & an iphone. I plan on getting an M(whatever) Mac Mini the next time they update it so your videos are so helpful. You have such a great organized delivery of information I’m sure I’ll be rewatching in the future. Thank you for sharing your expertise.

Great video! There seems to be a myth going around that only Macs require you to eject an external drive before physically removing it. It’s the same principle for pretty much everu operating system. Windows will complain if you don’t ”safely remove hardware” before de attaching it. The reason is that the operating system can speed up read and write speeds to USB devices by using r/w cache which stores data in the computers primary memory and there’s a very tiny risk that there are data in memory not yet written to the external drive, however these problems were more common back in the days of USB version 1.

Thank you for this excellent presentation. One can also eject a drive by dragging the drive icon from the desktop to the bin in the bottom right corner of the dock.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for showing me the create app shortcut for menu options that don't have a shortcut. I use strikethrough in the notes app all the time when addressing client notes that I've pasted into there. I like to use a strikethrough when I finish a note b/c I may want to go back to that note later so I don't like to just delete them. All the other functions have a keyboard shortcut except Strikethrough. It's bugged me endlessly. NOW I'VE GOT A KEYBOARD SHORTCUT FOR IT. Omg thank so much. It's been a small annoyance but it's great to have that annoyance finally eradicated.
