Whitechapel "Black Bear" from the album "The Valley".

The valley of the title relates to the part of Hardin Valley, west of Knoxville, Tennessee, where Bozeman grew up. Set against this backdrop, he approaches his subject matter unflinchingly, building upon everything that came before, making it clear that he has survived that which he was forced to endure and is not afraid to confront it. "Phil has been upfront in his lyrics in the past about hardships he endured in his life as a child, and I believe with this record we tried to paint a better picture of that," says Wade, who alongside his bandmates stands 100% behind everything their vocalist has to say. "I feel our music is Phil's release from his past, being able to get it out and speak about it, and hopefully anyone who hears it that may have gone through similar experiences can find some release in it as well." To track this powerful collection, the band once again teamed up with producer Mark Lewis (Cannibal Corpse, The Black Dahlia Murder) whose commitment to creating the best possible record reflects that of the musicians involved. "Mark has done the last three records so we are all aware of each other's work ethic from the start. I was pressed for time on lyrics but I always like to write when I'm pressured. Makes it easier for me somehow," Bozeman admits. Recorded in the home studios of Wade and Householder, with drums lain down at Warner Brothers Studio in Nashville, TN, the process was very comfortable for all concerned, taking longer than usual due to the band interrupting sessions to tour, but not to their detriment. "The sessions were fun to me overall but very much down to business," Wade says. "Not really much partying going on during tracking, it seemed everyone was there to do their job, and because they were pretty spaced out it did not seem like we were too rushed or stressed."

We just had a 19yo boy in the voice of Bulgaria that sang this banger flawlessly. It was magnificent

"Black Bear"

With this body, he is God and I am nothing

He has come for the blood of my only son
I can sense his heartbeat slowly fade
The sound of my voice is his way to me
I buried my tongue with my family's bones

As I lay me down to sleep
I pray to the Lord to put me six feet deep
Put me six feet deep

Father forgive me for I have sinned
I know that we will all meet our fate
Even the beast of the underworld
Burns eternally within his own flame

Sleep my son
Feel my embrace
Please don't forget my love
As the bullet goes through his brain
I wake up to live it again and again

As I lay me down to sleep
I pray to the Lord to put me six feet deep
Put me six feet deep
Pray to the Lord to put me six feet deep

I think what makes me like Whitechapel is that Phil has such good clarity vocally and he just gets better with time

One hell of a way to talk about childhood trauma.
I don't know much about Phil Bozeman, but I've heard years ago, before this album came out, that his father was not a very good man, to put it lightly.
And reading the lyrics while he's screaming them just makes my heart drop.

I truly wish the best for Phil, and hope they still make amazing music.

For who needs this like me:

[Intro]
With this body, he is God and I am nothing

[Verse 1]
He has come for the blood of my only son
I can sense his heart beat slowly fade
The sound of my voice is his way to me
I buried my tongue with my families bones

[Chorus]
As they lay me down to sleep
I pray to the Lord to put me six feet deep
Put me six feet deep!

[Verse 2]
Father forgive me for I have sinned
I know that we will all meet our fate
Even the beast of the underworld
Burns eternally within his own flame
Save my son, feel my embrace
Sleep my son
Feel my embrace
Please don’t forget my love
As the bullet goes through his brain
I wake up to live it again and again

[Outro / Chorus]
As they hang me down to sleep
I pray to the Lord to put me six feet deep
Put me six feet deep!
Pray to the Lord to put me six feet deep!

Kudos to Phil Bozeman for flawlessly enunciating in that deep guttural register, the drumming really shines on their new stuff, super dynamic. As for the three guitars playing the same main riff, well on one hand, it’s lack luster and boring at first listen but on the other hand, it’s actually pretty damn catchy, the riffs were structured to be more percussive and centered around the full song as opposed to technical leads and complex shapes and that makes their overall sound have this simplistic crushing groove. It’s very pop structured but I feel like many fans will gravitate toward that especially when they play live. Now whether this was a good change in direction for them, that’s not up to me to say. Imo tho, I do enjoy my death metal with groove but also shred.

The galloping of instrumentals with bozemans lyrics layered over is just Whitechapel magic

My friend got me this record signed at a show in Knoxville. Haven't listened to them in a couple years but this album is a BANGER. Black Bear had me like doing the frown and banging my head. 💜

I like it but same as Brimstone, the 3 guitarists are capable of so much more than chugging on the same 2 riffs for almost the entirety of the song.

Can’t wait to see the lyrics, this band got me through high school dealing with an abusive parent, I have followed this band religiously from the beginning and will continue to do so.
