"A Russian court on Tuesday upheld the nine-year prison sentence handed to American basketball star Brittney Griner for drug possession, rejecting her appeal.

Griner, an eight-time all-star center with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury and a two-time Olympic gold medalist, was convicted Aug. 4 after police said they found vape canisters containing cannabis oil in her luggage at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport."

She was warned before the trip to Russia not to bring any substances into the country, but she did it anyways, because she thought she was above the law, and the consequences wouldn't apply to her. Because let's be honest, they never have before in her life.
But play stupid games, get stupid prizes. Sometimes 'no' really does mean 'no', Brittney.

Sucks for her, the law sucks, her sentence is harsh. Obviously politics is involved. Having said that, she smuggled drugs into Russia, a country that would use any leverage they can against the US. WTF did she think the consequences would be? She broke their law.

Def not worth trading for a master arms dealer that has killed hundreds…..or more. No trade!

Russia is not a go to place for an American even before the war with Putin at the top. There had been reports of jailed Americans with trumped up charges prior to the war that the US government had a difficult time negotiating for a release. Months leading up to the war, the government issued travel warning to all Americans going to Russia and advised Americans to leave Russia. Britney ignored this and even worse brought in an illegal substance. Unfortunately, the current tensions between the two governments make it impossible for Britney to go home.

She lied. She knew she had the vapes. Every weed smoker knows exactly where all their stuff is. She risked it and got caught. It happens. Don’t piss off Russia because they will make up excuses and keep her for life.

She knew better than to take weed into Russia. If you can’t stay off the weed long enough to compete don’t go.

Oh well, poop happens. Don’t bring illegal drugs anywhere.

Punishment fits the crime. She should’ve have brought cannabis oil somewhere it’s illegal.

Her sentence sucks... But black people in USA are held waaaay longer for having had a little weed (or even having had NO weed, but the police planting it on them). Please start advocating as fiercely, not just for celebreties (who actually DID break drug crime), but average people!

I love weed much as next person. But do not take it to a country where it's illegal. I understand it's unfair but 9 years is too much.

Did anyone actually think she was gonna get out of this unscathed?

How about not taking illegal substances into a hostile foreign country? A harsh lesson perhaps. But being American doesn't excuse you from having to follow the laws of a country you're a guest in.

She broke the law in Russia what was she thinking, that she is special nothing will be done to her well now she must pay the price, there's no bother going to Russia just don't bring drugs with you like most people

I guess she shouldn't have broken the law in Russia ... that should be common sense for most adults, but I digress.

"People hate to think about bad things happening, so they always underestimate their likelihood."
This is a cautionary tale. Earlier this year, when Russia started parking all those tanks on the border of Ukraine, we all knew the war was coming. Not sure if she's naive, out of touch, or had a sheltered life and is not street-smart but she stayed there too long. And to make it worse, by the time she finally decided to leave, she had drugs on her luggage when she knew she was going to have her bags searched. That's a harsh lesson in life for her. She'll spend several years there, and I don't think she has the mental strength to survive such an ordeal intact. Sad story.

She should told truth at first she said she had medical excuse, then it went to oh i made a mistake, release people here in US for pot

Sorry, but she knew what she was getting into when she agreed to move to Russia. She knew it was a hopelessly corrupt authoritarian regime, she knew there was no justice, safety or freedom for the LGBTI community and she knew there was no equal application of the law yet she chose chasing money over exercising common sense.
No sympathy whatsoever.

Funny how she played for Russia and has short term memory loss of LAW restrictions
