Personally I love both chord progressions but which do you prefer? The Japanese favorite or Western one?

I like the Japanese one better, it seems more versatile, like you can imagine it being some awesome bit on electric guitar, or a more calm/kinda nostalgic bit on a piano or synthesizer

Can't live a life where I have to choose between vitamin b and vita C and vita d.
They are all loved and needed.
Much like those chords.
They are both beautiful
And each has its place under the sun.

i like the japanese one, its pretty versatile in my opinion! i found it interesting that you can follow it up with just the two of us progression, or many ither that start on ii or IV. makes it a bit harder to feel stale
as for the western one, its pretty biased, but i personally cant see its appeal in most songs, but sometimes i hear some songs that use it well (cant name any though)

This is common Japanese progression, but there are many japanese chord progressions that complicated but they're beautiful in other way.

The Royal road progression have almost 3 o 4 chord substitution on every chord of the progression. So you can built a crazy variation based on the same progression.
Another common progression is the "Kawaii" progression:
I - V -( vii/vi- V/vi) - Vi - ii/IV - IV

Rick Astley - Together Forever is an incredibly popular non-Japanese song that uses the royal road chord progression

The Japanese progression sounds open-ended. You can take it anywhere. Whereas, the 1/5/6/4 sounds so routine. You know where it goes. I may be saying that having American-raised ears, but American Pop doesn’t sound fresh whereas J-Pop uses that jazz/classical element to keep it open for the composer.

I like both equally, one is hopeful but with a hint of melancholy while the latter is very hopeful

Most Japanese music producers use RnB chord progression.
Japanese one is enjoyable where American one is emotional.
