Ahhh the White Pine Trail: one of Michigan's most popular bike paths! Proper name, Fred Meijer White Pine Trail State Park, is 92 miles long and extends from Grand Rapids to Cadillac, as it lies on an old railroad bed.

I wanted to highlight one of my favorite features, a unique stone trestle at an Algoma Township Park along Summit Street, just north of 13 Mile Road between Rockford and Cedar Springs. The Porter Hollow Embankment and Culvert, also known as the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad Culvert, carries the trail over Stegman Creek. Built in 1885, the culvert is made of cut fieldstone, and measures nineteen feet wide, 75' long, and passes about 19' above the water level in the creek below. The stonework rises six feet above the top of the arch, and continues onto wingwalls at each end. An unusual feature of the culvert is that the bed of the creek below the culvert is lined with wooden planks.

On this warm day in November, I happened upon one of the leaf blowers - good times! The Friends of the trail do an amazing job keeping up with the seasonal maintenance.

ENJOY! 💦
