I was so sick of vortex’s bullshit of me not being able to edit a load order manually. Thanks for this tutorial

thanks my friend, was a great help to a newbie to modding, especially when it comes to skyrim where it can be modded so heavily!

Few things I’ve learned in the few months I’ve been modding on PC. I too started with vortex and found it easy to use, at first. After you get past 100 mods it gets to be more of a challenge since you’ll get conflicts that need to be resolved and it’s far more challenging on vortex. I looked at MO2 and got overwhelmed just looking at it so stuck with vortex for two more load orders. After 200 mods it kept crashing my game so I switched to MO2. And I haven’t looked back since. I discovered Vortex uses a dirty method by rewriting game files whereas MO2 keeps those files intact just simply overwrites them for a much cleaner more stable game. It’s a little bit of a learning curve but not steep at all. I use the left pane to organize my mods into groups ie: tools, UI, atmospheric, landscape, buildings-locations-homes, retextures, character creation, animals-enemies, NPCs and so on. The right pane I use solely to download. I use loot to sort then reorder my load order using metadata to make sure the right mods overwrite other mods that need to. I use separator bars to group the left pane and it stays all nice and neat clean and if I’m having a issue with example blackface npc I know exactly where to go in that list in the left pane and don’t have to spend half hour searching up and down load order trying to find a specific mod which always gets renamed and harder to find. I found using the various themes to be super easy and they help too when looking to make sure all mods are active which sometimes they can be accidentally switched for unknown reason on both organizers. MO2 in my opinion is the far superior of the two.

Hi, I just started modding and have already quickly found issues with Vortex. Im hitting 80+ mods (all pretty lowkey - low demand mods too)but, am starting to notice incompatibilities between mods that *Should* work but im seeing vortex is just having issues properly overwriting. I did not notice that Vortex over-writes actual game files, and i did not backup the original skyrim folder due to simply being a noob and not knowing till way after the fact.

I have a higher entry-level / early mid-tier system so im know i won't be able to run 4K textures, or intense dynamic graphical overhauls but i am looking to have JK's Skyrim in combination with Cathedral Weathers + Landscapes & NPC overhauls. Gameplay wise, im hoping to take advantage of the OAR + MCO + Nemesis combo (but i have NO idea how to even overwrite default animations in OAR and no one has uploaded an easy to follow manual).

Im basically just going for a build that isn't too modern that i know my system will be able to handle with competency in standard 2K/120 or 1440/60. So far, the only CTD's i've experienced is because Vortex is having a hard time listen to order / plug-in commands.

At this point, would it make more sense for me to just completely purge my entire game folder, delete all files and just start over from Step A, and do a clean re-install of Skyrim AE, LOOT, and Nemesis? I know you made this short video, but would you be willing to help me?

Iv never gamed on PC before, so this is all brand-new to me.

Why I want to switch: vortex forces you to accept an auto generated load order, and only allows you to customize your load order when there are file conflicts.

Sadly, the problem can go much deeper than it seems. If you installed some things manually into the game directly, because that just felt like the best idea at that time, those changes made to the game files will stay, so unfortunately as someone else already noted, it's probably best to just uninstall the whole game and install it again, if you really wish to migrate to MO2.

Is there some way to get all of the mod info back like the ID's from the nexus so you can check updates?

I had a 750+ mod list in MO2 built over a long time which went down the drain when my hard drive died a few days ago. I recently downloaded a collection from the nexus to not go through the same time consuming process and had to swap to vortex for it. It will be a new game so it is safe to follow this guide and move the mods to MO2?

I tried to switch to MO2 because everyone kept telling me I should and, I'm sorry, I just don't get it. Vortex is so freakin' easy. "Step 1: click Mod Manager Download for the mod you want. Step 2: THERE IS NO STEP 2. YOU'RE DONE." MO2 sounds like it would be easier in the (for me, extremely unlikely) scenario where you get that 'web cycle', but that's easy to prevent because Vortex tells you when mods conflict and you can use suggestions to sort most things-- it TELLS YOU what order they should go in. Which only leaves the situation where there IS no suggestion. In which case, yeah, being able to simply slide a mod to the top of the list would be easier-- if you actually know what order those mods should go in. Which I don't, and am therefore in the same situation regardless of what manager I'm using.
Ugh.
