The towing problem is a golden opportunity for some entrepreneur to start a company making powered trailers that have their own battery to supplement the towing vehicle battery and maybe even a motor coupling into the car's control systm so that it would aid acceleration and braking.

Great news for NZ. This would suit a lot of NZ buyers who want a smaller Ute. (Pickup Truck) Many farmers and tradesmen have complained about the "Ute Tax" a payment for diesel and petrol driven larger vehicles that deliver less than the standard mpg. (Even some smaller petrol cars get a small discount)

I can imagine the off road crowd getting one and improving. First mod Samsung or LG battery pack. Second mod finish painting and rust proofing underneath.

LDV vans are very popular in NZ because they're reliable and cheap. Most urban warriors here in Auckland tow a boat which this would be okay for. Also has a 240v outlet.

I have been chasing ldv for a few years now here in Australia regarding the electric vans and utes only to be told it's down to red tape. .
yes it is a nice looking ute but disappointing with rear wheel drive and poor towing. . but there is a market for such a ute . most utes in Australia never get offroad, byd ute I think will be more on the money.

keep smiling everyone were getting there

Informative and balanced report. I remember reading an NRMA article a few years ago stating Australia has the highest ownership of 4WDs per capita in the world but only about 13% go off-road. I think it's similar with ute ownership here as well-lot's of big, chunky utes getting around but most of them are empty in the back apart from the odd one with surfboards, mtn bikes, camping gear.

Baby steps Baby steps Sam. Most pickup owners don't tow with their trucks. But payload is another story. Gratz to NZ on their new trucks.

Long as it doesn't become a bucket of rust like that one in Queensland.

It looks awesome ! 1500k is fortunately good enough for me however I’m not in love with the RWD.
Thanks Electric Viking ⚡️🙏🏽👍
Cheers 🍻

Imagine never having to pay for petrol or diesel ever again.

This unit would just cover my needs pulling the 5x10 aluminum dump trailer based on the max 900kg loads I haul with it.

$64K aud for 260km of real world range (factoring battery degradation over 10 years) is a bit steep. Doubling the range and keeping the price much the same, would give it a very good start in Australia,

At least it’s a start, in the right direction for the type of vehicles that a lot of Aussie and Kiwis want Sam, and as you say, maybe next year we will see an even better version, with longer range and tow-weight become available for our markets. At the very least, it’s hopefully, going to spark a bit of competition with other Ute makers, who will see ‘their sales’ being threatened by it, if enough people start buying it. 😉

There is going to be a Geely Radar Ute that will be officially announced soon (within days). Which will also be good to see how this stacks up compared to this. 320 km is okay but that is a little close to the line if there is any range drop from extra weight or battery degradation.

Not enough range and there isn’t much charging infrastructure outside of the cites. Be ideal for a small homestead with it’s own solar. As you say ‘better than nothing’ if your desperate for a BEV. Would definitely wait.

Electric Viking - KANDI K32 is only $28, 000 and is BETTER.

Some might consider buying one for light ute work and image. You could charge them off solar panels so they will have some appeal.

Well done NZ for leading the way. It's a shame this Ute is so weak. I need to tow a big boat.
