As an American let me apologize for this atrocity. If you Brits feel it necessary to storm her house like Normandy in order to recapture what is clearly a prisoner of war, most of us would understand.
Also to be clear, while "the South" has this penchant for sugar-water called "sweet tea", many of us know how to make a proper cuppa.

How very dare you. What you have there is a cup of sugary lukewarm milky water.
This could be like British people making a cup of instant coffee and comparing it to good old American cup of Joe, except of course when we make instant coffee it's infinitely more drinkable than your sickly sweet milky monstrosity you call tea .

FYI Americans!
Step 1: Tea bag in mug
Step 2: Boil water in kettle, not microwave!
Step 3: Pour water over tea bag in mug.
Step 4: Wait! Allow a minute or two for tea to brew.
Step 5: Strain tea bag with tea spoon and remove
Step 6: Add milk, some like more, Builders and chippies like less, it's up to you how much.
Step 7: Add sugar if needed. 2 teaspoons is the social acceptable max, if you add more than 2 people may comment or ask what's wrong with you.
Step 8: Enjoy with any British biscuit of your choosing

You may not have kettles “back home” but boiling hot water from a just boiled kettle is the ONLY way to get the true taste of tea.
Microwaved water may be hot but it somehow doesn’t give the authentic flavour that comes from using a kettle. You can buy a decent kettle for under £20 and use it for instant coffee in case someone unexpectedly turns up.
