Closing the 710 Gap

Will I-710 ever be finished? A 4.5-mile gap dumps more than 43,000 vehicles onto the streets of Alhambra, California, every day. Neighboring South Pasadena opposes a plan, which includes a 4.9-mile tunnel, to close the gap. It doesn’t want the freeway’s noise and air pollution. Kai Ryssdal reports on the passion surrounding a highway that doesn’t exist.

It has been proven that the "unfinished" 710, at most, "dumps" less than 8500 cars on surface streets bringing jobs to those communities. What is not said is that there will be a toll, $10 to $15 each way for a tunnel, further reducing "need" as drivers do the mathematics on which way to go. The tunnel will take upwards of ten years to build and be the longest auto tunnel in the US.

The money would be far better spent elsewhere.

Start digging the tunnel at night and maybe no one will know that it is mean it's the time it comes out the other end, who can say no to a 10 lane highway.  And, don't tell me the merchants of those two towns don't love the extra 50, 000 extra cars driving through their streets during the day, that means extra business.  They are probably the ones most opposed to the link.
