Why Japan is Growing into a Naval Military Powerhouse

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Kishida, Japan is projected to increase military spending by almost 60 percent by 2027. We’re talking about a massive increase of naval power, boosting US arms deliveries, such as Tomahawk missiles, and a new fleet of F-35 stealth multirole combat aircraft, but most importantly, the country is going to upgrade and fully modernize its Maritime Self Defense Force. Japan is building two gigantic Aegis system equipped vessels, modernizing all its existing Guided Missile Destroyers to the Aegis Combat System, as well as building an entire new series of Mogami-class Frigates. The objective for Japan is to increase their projection of force and be able to defend Taiwan when the time comes.

Having Japan on your side is so important. They're the only country to have defeated a giant lizard, a three headed giant monster from outer space, a giant worm and a giant flying tortoise. What other country can boast such feats?

No one should be under any illusion that Japan is not a client state of America. Their foreign policy is decided in Washington, ever since 1945 when their constitution was written by America and their land was occupied by American military bases.

At least Japan HAS a strategy. Here in Australia, the strategy is mostly to hang on to the coat-tails of the US, allow US bases in Australia to do whatever they want (with no requirement of disclosure to Australian government or people) and direct our defence spending as we are told... in the hope that the US will come to our rescue if & when needed.

A year or two ago I saw an ad from a website for foreigners seeking to work in Japan. One of the jobs listed was for ship wielders listed as being high in demand. This video made that ad make sense. Japan is ramping up their navy!

The risk of Japan having such small crews and having a lot automated is the risk of cyber warfare

Unfortunately, the weakest link in the Japanese plan is the American component. You need to develop indigenous equipment for your particular needs. One size doesn't fit all.

Japanese military forces are some of the most polite, generous, and intelligent people I’ve ever had the honor to do drills with, in 20 years overseas. I do regret never getting the option to see Taiwan (separate topic). My brother said they have the best food on this planet.

As a Japanese I have to admit that this military boost won’t mean much. We have a population crisis and have become too attached to this worldly life, like 75 years ago we would voluntarily commit suicide to destroy the enemy… no warrior/samurai spirit thanks to our true enemies usa and kishida government

Surface ships are huge targets for hypersonic missiles. Japan is walking down the same road as Ukraine has done.

I am one of 100, 000 American military personnel living in Japan. Despite what it looks like on paper, Japan is still a very pacifist nation. I have witnessed large protests against nuclear arms and defense spending during my three years here. For better or for worse, Japan is still 99% reliant on the US military and happily so.

Edit: the theory that Japan is gearing up to defend Taiwan is laughable

These expensive naval units are good for embargos and to counter china's area denial strategy with their cabbage tactics on the seas. However, they're ineffective against low cost asymmetric weapons like missiles or water mines. They're just big hunks of dead metal if it becomes a hot war.

The average age in Japan is close to 50. Who is going to be in their army and navy? Senior citizens? The land of the Rising Sun has become the land of the Setting Sun.

I don't know if they already have, but Japan must go thr Hungarian way and give money to families that have children. Japanese government has plenty of dept but also plenty of income as they are huge stock investors. Benefit of it, invest in tangible assets, farming, local industry so primary products become cheaper and people can have more children. Local industry > financial investment when facing danger.
