spain's silly entusiastic pop tradition is always hella strong, this is no exception

For anyone interested in this sub genre, it's called tontipop (literally "silly pop"). It first emerged in Spain in the late 90s, right after the grunge/alternative hangover, although many alternative bands of the era, like Undershakers, also evolved into this sound. It borrows heavily from the aesthetics of J-Pop. Big on keyboards and vocal harmonies. Voices are almost always childlike, but lyrics are tongue-in-cheek, disturbing or rebellious, thematically revolving around the teen/childhood years. There's a little bit of premature Peter Pan syndrome going on.
Undershakers, Meteosat, La monja enana, Los fresones rebeldes and Cola Jet Set are bands from that scene worth checking out. "Mis muñecas" by Nosotrash is, in my opinion, the perfect crystalization of the genre.

These girls are absolutely great. I met them by chance, they were playing at an outdoor concert in Coslada (Madrid) that I didn't go to, but it was 1km away and their music got into my head. Instant crush. Since then I can't stop listening to them and I'm glad that they are brave and go down their own musical paths regardless of fashions and trends. They are truly unique.

Estas chicas son absolutamente geniales. Las conocí por casualidad, tocaban en un concierto al aire libre en Coslada (Madrid) al que yo no fui, pero estaba a 1km de distancia y su música se me metió en cabeza. Flechazo instantáneo. Desde entonces no puedo dejar de oirlas y me alegro de que sean valientes y se adentren por sus propios senderos musicales al margen de modas y tendencias. Son únicas.
