Abebe Bikila announced the capabilities of the East African runners when he won the 1960 Olympic Marathon in World Record time. 2:15.16.2, barefoot. Four years later he repeated his victory with another world record 2:12:11.2 He won the race by over 4 minutes. He became a national hero, also Ethiopia. Movies and statues were made of him. It was not until December 3, 1967 that a man beat the time Tigist Assefa just did.
