Yeah, for walking around – everyone (except businessmen wearing suits) – wears trainers. Just wear trainers. When you're there, look at everyone's feet... honestly, they ALL wear trainers.

Another tip: don’t book a flight on the first of May (Labour Day) especially if you are staying around Taksim. In recent years, public and private transport has been shut down, in the entire area, sometimes even down to Besiktas and including ferries. They want to prevent people from gathering there to protest.
It’s OK if you are already there. You can enjoy walking around the otherwise busy streets. Just avoid Taksim / Istiklal street as they will most probably not be accessible.
