I agree, I loved "The Witch!" I wasn't dissaponited at all cause it was exactly what I thought it would be-a slow-burn, "what you don't see scares you the most" movie with a few intense scenes thrown in. I like ALL types of Horror movies but "Hack 'n Slash" is just fun for me but not so much scary cause I'm not squeamish, or one of those people that looks away. The Horror that scares me the most are films that get under your skin. I know exactly what's going to happen in most Slasher films but I didn't know what was going to happen in "The Witch" and that's why it was so effective to me.

I think the expectations are also related to the actual understanding of what Horror, has, could and should be. Modern audiences haven't seen too many challenging films on a psychological level and those that get the psych right, often get the rest of the horror soup wrong and vica versa. I think it's a genre that is among the most difficult to work in, because of the challenges. Cronenberg always made these pretty heady Horror films but man, if Dead Ringers doesn't haunt me in some way.

While monsters and evil can be presented as coporeal in film, it also lends itself to the idea that as Stephen King put it "We sometimes need to create unreal monsters and bogies to stand in for all the things we fear in our real lives." That will always be at the core for me of Good Horror. That is all to say, I look forward to seeing this film :)

It sounds like my type or Horror. I can't stand jump scare, ghost type horror movies. They're usually crap and overly saturated.

I think the fact that the movie introduces itself as a New England Folktale should tip audiences off that it's not going to follow the type of narrative structure most mainstream films use these days. It seems to me the average person believes they know what folktales are like but really have no idea since they haven't personally read any themselves. The film's backbone is based entirely on folktales from roughly that period and part of the world - I recognized elements from at least five different stories and there were probably way more than that. It's kind of sad that for a horror film containing supernatural elements, its real world authenticity is not only what makes it stand out but also will work against it with most audiences.

It's a work of art. A great film, in the art of film. For the average horror fan it's probably not popcorn material. It's arthouse thriller/horror. Definitely a future cult film. So don't expect Avengers level epic.

The Witch didn't scare me much but to be honest... it didn't need to. It was not a truly great film but it was good and I really liked it. And it sure as hell was infinitely better than all that jump-scare garbage. It gets a thumbs up from me, just like this review! :)

I couldn't finish it the other night. Not because it was boring or the language. I just had a hard time hearing what they were saying. I had my tv at the loudest it could go and I still couldn't make out what was being said, sounded like a bunch of mush mouths lol. I didn't even know why they left the village lol. I rented it digitally, so I'm gonna have to pickup the blu Ray and watch it with subtitles or better sound system.

You said it exactly right pizowell about the witch. I myself loved it and like you it made me also uncomfortable which means it's doing its job. It is most certainly a thinking person's movie the younger generation will more than likely not like it and think it's boring but for us 80's horror kids oh yea bring em on lol.
