GRBL firmware install on old MKS Gen L 1.0 with Trinamic TMC2208 drivers Laser Cutter Mill CNC

I was looking for something to install and test GRBL on and noticed that my old MKS Gen L board was pinned nearly Identical to the Arduino Mega 2560 with ramps 1.4 board. I'm guessing allot of old 3D printer boards with work with GRBL as long as the processor pinouts are the same.

You gave my old 3d printer board second life, thanks!! MKS + 4 x TMC2208 are working great in my CNC machine and it's like 5 times quieter than A4988.

This is very handy as I have a MKS Gen L v1.0 that will become available soon for me to build a CNC machine

Very many thanks for Your great help through the video; especially the for me, the section starting @6:52 was very supportive. All the best and carry on such good and practical information. Franz-Juergen

the thing that never got mentioned is where you plug in the cnc spindle on the mks gen l + grbl

Thanks for this. I happen to have the hardware for this so this is perfect. What I am also looking for is how you have connected the motors (I presume still X and Y) and where and how the laser is connected. If you could include a picture somewhere that would be awesome and save me having to go and pick up an MKS DLC v2.0 board (which would be plan B). if you have no picture, I presume the live and ground wires go to extruder connector, but what two pins are you using? Oh and one more question: don't you also need to load firmware for the cutting/laser onto the TFT? If so, can you point me at it? Thanks again!

I really hope this will work with the new board I got first time at this

What laser are you using and is it TTL? If so, where are you hooking up to on the board? I've been reading up on this, and a lot of folks switch to PIN 44 on the mks so it uses 5v pwm if they were using Marlin. Typically, folks used the fan out put and controlled it that way, but apparently that would be full bore 12v or 24v depending on psu (I think..).

Awesome. But you forgot to mention how to configure those TMC2208 drivers with grbl !!

I am trying this board with my CNC 3018 machine that use used as a cnc router and a cnc laser engraver. I do wonder the pinouts where to connect the 2-pin spindle and the 3-pin laser. Please advice.

I have an Ender 3 that I bought a second board for when I purchased the machine, I also have an A10M that I've stripped for parts that came with GT2560 v4 board. I'm using the aluminum and belts etc to build a laser engraver, can I flash either of these boards (preferably the GT2560v4) with GRBL so I can use it for the engraver?

Hi, how could I do to move the two motors of the Y axis? That is, a motor Y to the Y connector of the GEN L and the other motor Y to the EO connector of the board, but as is the configuration in grbl.thanks

Really useful, thank you. What is the code that's running on the display?

Hello My laser needs a TTL output but I have not found where the TTL connector is on the MKS GEN L v1.0. I want to run GBRL on the board. Has any of you got any experience

I’ve been trying to get grbl onto a mks Sbase 1.3 and can’t figure it out Ive seen people running it on this board but can’t find anything on how to do it

thanks for the video its been the only useful video for me ive found everything else has been useless. anyway ive got a laser engraver its got a generic grbl board 2 drivers a clone nano and some ports not much else. i want to use my mks gen L instead i dont like having to leave my laptop plugged into it while its running.

firstly what about the settings ? i mean ive got 2x Y motors and 1x X motor thats all the motors. i dont have end stops either like a 3d printer does usually.

also where do i plug everything in? my laser hasnt got a board on top its just a couple of wires they goto a box and i think it includes a laser controller the fan and the laser connect to the board i think it does the voltages then it plugs into the main board so i guess i need to plug that board into my mks gen L but where?

i have a screen with sd card support the 12864 blue lcd id like to use that and sd card.

im ok with setting up marlin and doing the settings in there myself i havent got a problem with that but i dont see that much in the config file compared to marlin

finally will vscode work instead of arduino ide?

Thank you in advance

Can you share the exact file that you use?
