You know how when someone has a seizure you're supposed to put something in their mouth to keep them from swallowing their tongue? Don't do that.

So, hopefully to clear up some confusion...I worked for many years with adults with disabilities, many of whom had grand mal seizures. This is how I was trained to handle them (others may have been trained differently):
1) time the seizure
2) make sure the person seizing is as safe from harm as possible by clearing the area. Leave them alone unless they are in immediate danger of hurting themselves. Don't put anything in their mouth. Yes, they may bite their tongue, but that is better than choking to death on whatever you shoved in their mouth or them accidentally biting you instead.
3) Do not call 911. The person, their families or caregivers know how to deal with the aftermath. The only time a person should go to the emergency room after a seizure is if it is the first time it has ever happened OR if the seizure lasted exceptionally longer than normal. Many times driving the person to the doctor after the seizure is much smarter than wasting time to call 911 and get charged with an ambulance bill.

Your tongue is a muscle and when your having a seizure the muscle relaxes. So you can swollen it. Also my mom works in the hospital and has seen it before. If you type in soccer player swallows tongue on YouTube, you can see it happen.

that awkward moment when "don't be dumb" looks really dumb, because they think the soft palate anchors the tongue to the bottom of your mouth. 

the soft palate is that flap of skin at the *top* of the back of your mouth. the thing the uvula is attached to fyi.
