Which company do you want to learn about next? 🤔

You are correct that the bonuses are only signing bonuses which are paid out over two years. The first bonus is a signing bonus for that year, which is given by a single installment included with your first paycheck (~25k L4 ). The second bonus in year two is also a signing bonus which is a little bit less and is issued in prorated pay period installments throughout your 2nd year.

Nice explanation. But I believe there are a few corrections needed:
1> The focus should be at total compensation (TC) per year. Base is going to be constant for all 4 years (unless promoted). Since the stock vesting is just 5% and 15% for the first 2 years, so the bonuses in the year1 and year2 are given in such a way that they meet the offered TC for the year. For example, if your offered TC is 320k (with base 160k),
i> First year compensation would be: 160k base, 140k bonus (~12k in each month's paystub), 20k stock vest.
ii> Second year compensation would be: 160k base, 100k bonus (~9.5k in each month's paystub), 60k stock vest.
iii> Third year compensation would be: 160k base, 0 bonus, 160k stock vest.
iv> Fourth year compensation would be: 160k base, 0 bonus, 160k stock vest.
2> The numbers for each level is rather a range, and depends on the location. Just an example: L6 at Bay Area can be between 320 to 500k.

I think it’s fair to say that while Amazon’s package is amazing, it’s the lowest of the FAANG companies. Their 401(k) is pretty putrid AND you have to wait for it to vest? Clearly, they go all in on the stock.

I'm curious as to how one progresses through these ranks. What is Amazon looking for in a L7 Engineer? What are those technical interviews like? Another Banger. Thanks Cody 🔥

I have been SDE at amzn since July 2017 and live in CO. These numbers are more or less accurate. Great research.

Amazon has increased their compensation recently. For example, I’m an L4 engineer making roughly 200k total compensation per year. If I were in a high cost of living area, it would be even more.

I would love to see a hypothetical breakdown of the 4-year Amazon stock grant for L4 employees. For instance, assume year starts January 1, with $123, 000 annual salary. What does the first year look like for stock grants? How much $ in stock is granted during that first year, and when? Then for the second year, third, etc. Assume no raise during the first four years (unlikely, I hope! but trying to keep it simple).

If you have ever worked in Amazon, you know what frugality means - no milk in fridge at all, who cares about coffee drinker? Money is what all matters to the CEO. I just hate its culture. Its packages is the worst in FAANG.

The back loading of stocks means unless you stay for 4 years is highly unlikely. The average tenure is less than 2 years…so your actually comp is 50% of what they say…

Amazon compensation for the first year is just your base + 1st year sign on + 5% stock. It's actually not that bad considering the stock has been stagnant for about a year. Amazon in Canada pays up to 90% of all your health benefits. I hear alot that they ramped up their compensation and pay very high now. Total compensation in Canada for my L5 Engineering role is around 280k cad in the first year

Seems Amazon is by far the worse big tech company to work for.
Backlog vesting, 401k 3 year vesting and barely 50%, no bonuses only signing.... 😳 Just completely not worth it at all to work there.
I've also heard about the fact they need to have a certain rate of PIP per year (so even a good performer, if unlucky could get it) .

Seems they have terrible treatment all across the employee chain from delivery people to the tech to the exception of the CEO lol 🤣

I never would have guessed they'd pay programmers that much.

Question: Are stock grants and bonuses being taxed too? And how?

You need to differentiate between premium and non-premium markets. Only the bay and NYC are premium getting the base you described. non-prem has a upper limit of 160k and lower starting base. Also the MBDR is limited to 10% of base.
