Winter Murray cod fishing with cheese

It's well known that winter is a great time of the year to target the big Murray cod, but for the average angler it can be a tough time to catch them.
Up until last year I had always written off winter as far as Murray cod fishing was concerned, but lockdown laws prohibiting me from travelling forced me to fish my local waters only, which led to a new found appreciation of winter Murray cod fishing.
This winter, again in lockdown I have been restricted to fishing in my local waterways and although I haven not replicated the success of last winter, I have managed to get a few bites, and hook a few cod including this lovely 61cm Murray cod caught on cheese.

Nothing wrong with cheese as a bait
Once shared a house boat on the Murray at Echuca years ago with my lot and a family of seven

We moored at the end of the day and I told everyone I thought I'd try using the handline to catch the infamous Murray cod but the only bait on hand was leftover cheese cubes

Well as soon as I dropped the baited hook in the water one of the local ducks did what they do - it duck-dived and came up with the hook stuck in its bill

Pandemoneum erupted with everyone screaming at the sight of me trying to bring in my first flying fish !!

Managed to pry the hook out and it was no worse for wear
