How To Tie The Clove Hitch : Why I rarely use it.

The Clove Hitch can be a very useful starter knot in non-critical applications when used in conjunction with a Half Hitch. It is not a very secure knot though, as it can have a tendency to work itself free in various applications.

Actually agree with what you said. I was practicing the clove hitch and noticed how easy it came apart lol. But I would say its an excellent knot for none critical stuff since its so easy.

Thanks for this! When I did it the first time I was really skeptical about its effectiveness on its own so i wanted a second opinion. Really like the straight forward discussion :)

One of the application for which I use the clove hitch knot is to increase friction or surface area of an object secured by a bowline.
Keep up your excellent work!

One of my favourite hitches is a backhand hitch. It consists of a munters hitch with two half hitches. It's easily undone while still in control of the tension of the rope.

As a general question, in your experience, which hitches work best when tying to a vertical post?

Clove hitch is the only knot I can throw (there may be others) with standing line. However, it takes a limber line and lots of practice to do it well. It's hard to explain in few words, but I'll try, basically you throw two loops around a standing object like a pillar, girder, or another person this gives you a clove hitch as long as long as there's enough room, the line is not too frayed and maintain tension you may be able to pull yourself out of a bad situation. Like I said it takes practice. Throwing another loop helps jam the knot. Maybe there's YouTube vid that shows it better.

lay the working end to the right over the first turn...then tuck it back under the first turn... constrictor knot...

When using a clove hitch always tie a safety knot back on the standing line. It’s more secure then the half hitch. As you said, not a life safety knot.
