Rachmaninoff makes what he plays sound like he composed it himself. I tried that and my piano teacher had a fit. Guess only a genius can do that.

This is, as pointed out, Rachmaninoff's version of Tchaikovsky's work.

Tchaikovsky originally wrote his Opus 16 for soprano with piano accompaniment. At his publisher's behest, Tchaikovsky wrote versions of numbers 1 (this one), 5, and 6 for solo piano, and he further wrote this one in both its original A-flat-minor and in the technically easier A-minor. The composer didn't put much enthusiasm into these, and his original version (for piano) isn't commonly used today. His manager and protege, Pavlo "Paul" Pabst, fleshed out the arrangments, and those are the ones used by most performers today. Rachmaninoff loved this berceuse and played it often as an encore, but he didn't get around to putting it on paper until 1941, shortly after revising his fourth concerto. This was the last work that Rachmaninoff wrote, and its performance you hear is one of the last works he recorded.
