Hear Me Soar! ~ For The Love Of Vultures

Seeing vultures circling up in the sky overhead is always a sign of something happening on the ground or in the trees below - a recent kill by the big cats perhaps.

Interestingly though, as often as we may see them flying, vultures don’t actually fly very well. What they do well is soar! On the thermals over distances of up to 150 kms!

The first Saturday in September each year is International Vulture Awareness Day. Today we raise awareness of the important role that vultures play in the environment.

Vultures are vital ecologically but they face a range of threats with some species facing extinction.

Vultures help the ecosystem by feeding on dead or dying animals and as National Geographic says: “they perform a crucial but massively underrated ecosystem service: the rapid cleanup, and recycling, of dead animals.”

Spend some time getting to know the vultures of the world today! And their often overlooked significance on earth!

They soar as do the eagles. Majestic. Thank you for the video.

How beautiful they look gliding through the sky. They provide a huge service to nature. Kind of nature's funeral director.

Reminds me of the vultures' restaurant at HESC. 🙂
