I still find it wild that Ethan went from extreme hard boy with a knife to a soft and more natural boy with a pom pom and a knife.

Ethan is the most aggressive and calm person in the world at the same time.

My advice to my students.

Create 3 targets. One in your "weight class" that your competitive with (the Rival), One just outside your "weight class" that your strive to study from (the Mentor), One so far out of your weight class they are on the horizon that is your ultimate goal to equal (The Master). When you beat your Rival, find a new rival. When you have gotten all you can from your mentor, Get a new mentor. When your equal with your master, Find a new master.

Revisit your old work and try to redo it. You'd be surprised sometimes you've progressed so much and sometimes you might have regressed. Don't take the regression as a bad sign it could just mean you learned something fundamental the old you didn't know.

Fundamentals are not baby stuff they are the beginnings of every difficult work. even the greatest of masters needs to fall back onto them for difficult shots. So at the start you should expect to use your fundamentals all the time.

The eraser is as much a marking tool as your pencil. What information you chose to take away changes your work just as much as what you add.

Artistic rules are meant to be broken but only when one understands why such rules exist in the first place.

What I adore about him is when he fixes the art submissions, he maintains that artist's style. I could still tell who the artist was. I've seen so many other "fixes" where they completely change the original art to suit their own style to the point where its now unrecognizable. He's offering advice that works for everyone, but still tailors the demonstration to the subject.

"infant brain" isn't actually an insult since kids' brains are extremelly malleable and fast, I would rather be insulted by "colledge student brain mid semester" than that

5:08 "Use your time wisly, you're going to die." I've never heard such good advice put so bluntly, I love it.

Compare what the artist is doing correct, dont compare success or "I'll never be as good" mindset. Study with precision.

Glad to know as a short person, I’m accepted here <3
Thank you for being open to the ugly/strange/not average folks

Also, that lick of the paper-
That is some bad advice, but it’s great to see the advice properly tested with no hesitance.

*Drinking Game:* Take each shot every time Ethan says "infant brain" to the artist.

I just finished my first week of animation college! It was a super competitive program, and I honestly wouldn’t have gotten in without ethans videos over the years. I realize every day that there are a million more things I need to learn, but I’m excited for it. And honestly theres nothing I’m learning in college that you can’t find for free on YouTube. Ethan is an incredible resource 👊😎 he also makes learning fun

Ethan just drops "use your time wisely, you're gonna die" mid sentence like it's nothing lol

"You ever heard of an INSINYA-ATION?"
Ethan's southern accent casually dropping every few sentences brings me joy

I'm still trying to find the sweet spot between sketching and outlining personally. I learn best and I pick things up more when I'm more laxed and it DOES show in my finished work. Just gotta find that nice in-between where I'm still somewhat enjoying it and learning and have less of a mess to tiddy up.

my best art advice would probably be to find a character to obsess over with and use that character as your muse for years. Your obsession would make you want to draw that character as good as possible and before you know it, your overall art skills has also improved with time. Works for me at least

I just got to the part where it said "Just draw with your eyes..." and although this could go in a number of directions, it might be referring how you take note of different qualities of that object or what ever you're drawing and focus on implementing them one step at a time. The problem is that even with this more specific interpretation is that it is very general and you need to ask about specifics depending on what the focus of the art is.
