Rare Daylight Rock Train Departs Bloomington on the Indiana Rail Road.

I was in downtown Bloomington with a friend on Tuesday, February 23rd when I heard INRD 4005 get permission from MP 54 to Linton southbound with reversing. Knowing train SAHW with 9010 leading was still an hour and a half away, I knew that 4005 on a Tuesday could only be one thing: ROCK TRAIN!

This catch is relatively rare. Trains RMEBO and RBOME (empty and loaded rock trains respectively between Rogers Quarry in Bloomington and Hoosier Energy Merom Generation Station) most often run at night after train HWSA, the Sun-Fri northbound manifest has cleared Bloomington on its way north to Indy. However, on this day they got sent south ahead of train SAHW, the southbound counterpart to HWSA. This allowed me to get this shot of the beautiful pair of SD40s leading a unit train out of town.

Approaching Liberty Drive, the train slowed down to drop off a trainmaster who was check riding the crew, allowing me to get the 645E3s notching up from a stop out of town!

Dont think I've ever seen demoted stainless or aluminum coal cars with rapid discharge gates. Seems like they would get ripped up quickly. With spring on the way CN will bring out these old ore jennies at least 40 years old. Of course when INRD first started I recall the ex GM&O woodchip hoppers hauling coke out of Rosemont MN on the SOO. Those 2 SD40s had zip!
