I once had a mission to take out a pack of dogs in the Red Forest. I opened fire and soon realized the pack was bigger than i thought, so i climbed atop some nearby rocks for safety. The dogs started running away from my location, as i kept lighting them up with my Remington. Just as soon as i took a deep breath and gathered my courage to chase them down, a Chimera one-shots me from the back.
And i have never walked into the Red Forest again without checking my back at every single step.

The fact that sequences like these are entirely unscripted is what really makes Stalker games special. 👌

A lot of the scare factor in these games comes from the fact that mutants are often completely silent until they actually attack you, which allows them to basically jumpscare you at any moment if they've got the drop on you

The scariest moments in my opinion are those when you know that there is a mutant nearby but lack enough information about the situation, especially during the early game when you don't have great gear

"What mutant is it? Is it alone or are they in a pack" "Does it know I'm here?" "Can I take it?" "Would running away be the better option? If so will it be better for me to sprint? I might just alert the mutant, then again it might already noticed me and sneaking is just allowing it time to get close?"

These are just some questions that will be running in your head. And as the anticipation rises, so does the dread... you are not just jumpscared, there is a build up of fear... and then

You either are attacked and shocked such as this climaxing a build up of fear....

Or nothing happens... the mutant passes and you are safe

But you know that your fear was justified... "this encounter is just one of many, luckily it was one of THOSE moments" you tell yourself, and you move on

This is why I love Anomaly so much... due to it's unscripted nature, you have stories like this, stories to tell in a campfire while eating sausage and drinking vodka
