Ghent, a historic city located in the Flemish region of Belgium, is known for its rich cultural heritage, picturesque canals, medieval architecture, and vibrant atmosphere. Here are some key points about Ghent:

1. **History**: Ghent has a long and storied history dating back to the Middle Ages when it was one of the largest and richest cities in Europe. It played a significant role in the wool trade during the Middle Ages, which contributed to its prosperity.

2. **Medieval Architecture**: The city boasts a stunning array of medieval architecture, including the Gravensteen Castle, a medieval fortress with a moat and torture museum, and the Belfry of Ghent, a tall bell tower offering panoramic views of the city.

3. **Gothic Cathedrals**: Ghent is home to several impressive Gothic cathedrals, such as Saint Bavo's Cathedral, which houses the famous Ghent Altarpiece by the Van Eyck brothers, one of the most important works of art in European history.

4. **Canals**: Much like its Belgian counterpart, Bruges, Ghent features scenic canals that wind through the city, offering charming views and providing a picturesque backdrop for leisurely walks or boat tours.

5. **Cultural Hub**: Ghent is a vibrant cultural hub with a thriving arts scene, numerous museums, galleries, and theaters. The city hosts various cultural events and festivals throughout the year, including the Ghent Festival (Gentse Feesten), one of Europe's largest cultural festivals.

6. **Gastronomy**: Belgium is renowned for its cuisine, and Ghent is no exception. Visitors can indulge in delicious Belgian specialties such as waffles, chocolate, beer, and hearty Flemish stews. The city also offers a diverse range of restaurants, cafes, and bars to suit every taste.

7. **University City**: Ghent is home to Ghent University, one of Belgium's largest and most prestigious universities, which contributes to the city's youthful and dynamic atmosphere.

8. **Sustainability**: In recent years, Ghent has gained recognition for its efforts in promoting sustainability and environmental initiatives. It has implemented measures to reduce car traffic, improve public transportation, and encourage cycling, making it a more livable and eco-friendly city.

Overall, Ghent offers visitors a delightful blend of history, culture, and charm, making it a must-visit destination in Belgium.

I live in Belgium but Ghent is a city I never visit although it's beautiful. Getting there by train is a disaster, as both stationd in Ghent are very far from the city center. Getting your train back to Antwerp after a concert is impossible unless you want to leave after the support act ! Driving there by car is also a nightmare.
