Calaveras Dam Replacement Project

To comply with the latest seismic safety standards and restore the supply reliability of its regional water infrastructure system, SFPUC developed the Calaveras Dam Replacement Project. The project included a new 220 feet-high zoned earth and rock fill embankment, new concrete spillway and new intake tower. Representing SFPUC, Black & Veatch led the construction management of the project, providing contract, quality and environmental oversight.

"It’s one of the most important projects from a water supply and a delivery reliability standpoint, but the project is really driven by seismic reliability. This new dam that we have is designed to withstand a maximum credible earthquake of seven and a quarter magnitude on the Calaveras Fault, which is only about a thousand feet from the dam itself. When we started this project, we knew that we wanted to get world class teams on this project and construction management was no exception. Black & Veatch put together a great team and really did a tremendous job providing the leadership to get everybody on the same page and move the project forward in a productive way."
