Tirana is located in central Albania and has been the country’s capital since 1920. And although it experienced political turmoil until 1991, the city has now evolved into the cultural and entertainment center of the country.
It's known for the colorful architecture of the Ottoman, Fascist and Soviet eras. The pastel-colored buildings surround the city’s main point, Scanderberg Square, named after the equestrian statue of a national hero. On the northern side of the square is the modernist Museum of National History, with evidence from prehistory to the communist period and the anti-communist revolutions of the nineties.
It flourished as a city in 1614, but the region that today corresponds to its territory has been inhabited continuously since the Iron Age. The area was populated by the Illyrians and was most likely the nucleus of the Illyrian Kingdom of the Taulants, which in classical antiquity was centered in the hinterland of Epidamnus. Following the Illyrian Wars it was annexed to Rome and became an integral part of the Roman Empire. The heritage of that period is still evident and represented by the "mosaics of Tirana". Later, in the 5th and 6th centuries, an early Christian basilica was built around this site. After the division of the Roman Empire into East and West in the 4th century, the successor Byzantine Empire took control of most of the Principality of Arbanon and the Despotate of Epirus and built the Castle of Petrelë during the reign of Justinian I. Compared to other Albanian cities it was quite irrelevant until the twentieth century, when the Congress of Lushnjë proclaimed it the capital of Albania (1920), following the declaration of Albanian independence by the Turkish-Ottomans in 1912.

Greatest thing about Albania is that - Albania is in the process of officially abandoning a religion that was enforced by the Ottomans for 500 years. The number adhering to this religion has declined to only 45% in 2023, which is 10% less than in 2012 and 20% less than in 2003. Albania is reverting back to its origins.
