Statement from world powers ‘doesn’t mean the threat of nuclear war is past’

ASPI Senior Analyst Dr Malcolm Davis says a joint statement from five world powers on nuclear weapons “doesn’t necessarily mean the threat of nuclear war is past”.

It comes after China, Russia, the United Kingdom, France and the United States released a rare joint statement in which they agreed nuclear war should be avoided.

“I think that the greatest risk of nuclear war in the coming years are from … the Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan or the possibility of some sort of conflict emerging from the Korean peninsula,” Dr Davis told Sky News Australia.

“And the third one to worry about of course is Iran moving rapidly to acquire nuclear weapons.

“But also, I think we do have to focus very much on the major powers – the risk of escalation in a crisis, for example, between China and the United States over Taiwan, or between Russia and NATO, where tensions are spiking right now.”

Sounds like something Chamberlin would crow about.

History showed us, that a piece of paper didn't stop iron tanks rolling through Europe's borders.

There are a few other nuclear countries that weren’t included in that statement . 🤔

Never believed it was. And this is someone who lived in the shadow of a threat of nuclear war in the 1960s, 70s and 80s

Funny this coming from the 5 countries that make a ton of money on arms if it stays conventional, go figure.

The big war has to and will happen. I feel bad for all these foolish people just living day to day like everything is going to be ok. Nothing is going to get better. When you wrap ur tiny little head around that fact you'll be happier. 😊

Could they put that time and effort into skinning the predator class alive in order to decrease the threat of nuclear war? After all they just hurt children and have chosen to be non essential.

Why bother with nuclear weapons when Bioweapons are comparatively much cheaper and effective as nuclear weapons.

If they say nuclear weapons should be avoided then they should all disarm then. It's all just empty words I think

What Might Help Is People Like Mr. Davis Refraining From Using Misnomers Like: "Reunification!" It Implies A Chinese Sovereignty Over "Taiwan, " Actually Formosa, That China Never Had, At Any Stage!! Perhaps It's Time Someone Asked The Formosans For Their Opinion!!

Sounds like they are seriously contemplating nuclear war.

Wonder if Iran will see it that way? Reminds me of Kellogg Briand Pact declaring an end to war … a few years later a man called Hitler announced he had built the world’s largest Air Force ….

Australia's military is far too small to achieve the task required of it as it is vastly dwarfed in terms of numbers of personnel and equipment by all of its neighbours. This is the result of decades of underfunding and neglect by its politicians who prefer to focus on quality of lifestyle type issues at the expense of fundamental matters of existence. Enabling this strategic apathy and negligence is the misguided belief that US military power is nearly unlimited and globally dominant and that it would automatically come to the defence of Australia should any of her neighbours attack it.

The US is not obligated under the ANZUS Alliance to send troops or equipment to our aid in the event of an attack on us. They are only obligated to engage in talks with us and nothing more.

However, what is clear is that no one would risk attacking us if we were nuclear-armed. Better to prevent war than to try to prosecute one inflicted upon us.

Gen Dannat made it absolutely clear to Beijing in a recent interview on GB News that if the CCP invaded Taiwan, the UK woujld just stand back and leave them to it! Fortunately Dannat is retired, so this should not cause too much alarm among our allies, but I regret to report that Dannat is all too typical of those who achieve high rank in the Beritish armed forces. It's the same with our politicians, those with the least talent tend to rise to the top, Boris being a typical example.
