Mastermind, O'saa's Moonscorch Form Lore #fearandhunger2
O’saa’s moonscorch into Mastermind is unique as he is the only character not to scream in pain and instead seemingly accepts his fate as he goes into a meditative stance. The Mastermind may seem like it has agency for a moonscorched being, but it is actually the representation of O’saa fear of being controlled by external forces. Most of O’saa’s life has been guided by events outside of his control as he grew up in the war torn land of Abyssonia, his pursuits to gain power by channeling the power of the Old Gods, and how Nas’hrah guides him as the beheaded wizard item. The name Mastermind is how O’saa truly wants to be, the one in control of his own life and events in the world, and the form and dialogue of Mastermind is similar to the Greater Mumblers of the first Fear & Hunger as he will only mumble in battle, and the Mumblers are beings warped by the God of the Depths influence, mirroring how O’saa is afraid of being controlled by the influence of the Gods that he wants to gain dominion over. The head of Mastermind reinforces this as it appears to be a mushroom-like fungus which in the real world can be parasitic and take over their hosts actions. In an interesting parallel Mastermind can be seen meditating in the overworld and will cast hurting on the player as they approach him just like the Yellow mages do in the original Fear & Hunger who directly worship Gro-goroth and follow Nas’hrah, which shows how O’saa fears becoming a pawn of Nas’hrah like the Yellow Mages before him.
