PhD student Basem Al-Shayeb discusses the new gene-editing protein, CasΦ, which he and postdoc Patrick Pausch discovered in huge bacteriophages. The CasΦ protein is hypercompact and provides a powerful new tool in the CRISPR genome editing toolbox to potentially alter plants or cure disease.
